Combat happens when the Kingdom faces down enemies and the environment. This usually requires the use of Skills and Attacks, though sometimes Proficiencies also come into play. Combat happens during Events and is often predictable or announced by the DM of the event in advance; though player choice and DM preference may result in surprise Combat. Dice rolls are required for Combat; we have a dice rolls channel in our Discord that is required-use for this purpose.
Combat takes place in Rounds, with player characters and NPCs involved. Combat begins with a roll for Initiative, during which each character rolls 1d20. Turn order is based on highest roll to lowest roll.
Rounds are divided into initiative order – a flat d20 for everyone involved. Groups of NPCs/monsters may go individually or all at the same initiative step, at the GM’s discretion.
When a player’s Turn arrives, they can take two Actions:
The list of possible Actions a player may take are:
· Move
· Attack
· Skill
· Interaction
A move allows a character or monster to change position anywhere in the combat arena (usually a defined area or room). Movement outside the arena requires two actions, as covered under Interaction.
An attack is simply any ability that rolls only Damage. They are carried out by a roll off between Damage (of the attacker) and Defense (of the defender).
Attacks are done with a roleplay Weapon of your character’s choice. This may be the same as the weapon you use in-game or a different one. We encourage people to be creative with their specific choice of weapon, and instead give guidelines for basic weapon classes and the type of damage they do. If you want to use a weapon not listed below and want to check where it fits, please contact the GM via Discord DM.
Skill:
A skill is an ability that can do damage but rather has other effects, e.g. disabling effects, healing, etc. They are carried out as a roll of a d20 vs a flat threshold stat called a Resistance value. Resistanceis normally 10 but can be altered based on statuses and DM assessments. If a skill does damage but fails to meet or exceed the Resistance value of the target, both the damage and the affect are resisted. If a skill meets or exceeds Resistance of the target, then damage is rolled separately, as is Defense as though it were an attack. For more information on Skills, please visit the Skills List page.
Interaction:
Interactions are just actions that allow a character, NPC, or monster to do something other than the above actions. Typically, these involve making checks that are not Skills or Attacks, such as to interact with an NPC, pick up an item, or the like. An Interaction can also allow player characters to leave the combat arena, such as move to the next room or flee from the battlefield – but only if they are next to an obvious exit or near the edge of the space.
Non-Combat Interactions consist of everything else that isn't Combat. Examples of Non-Combat Interactions that may take place during Events: games, puzzles, investigations, debates, research, and social interactions, though this list is not meant to be exhaustive.
