Narion Rilis was born in Summerset in 2E 550, the illegitimate child of Maevwen Rilis and Arvandil Direnni. Narion grew up without his father, who was not made aware of the child's existence until Narion was 17 due to enmity between House Rilis and Clan Direnni. Arvandil decided not to interfere in the boy's life due to his marriage to Celestine DeLisle, a Breton noblewoman, and their own child, Jeanne-Françoise, who had not yet reached the age of majority. Narion would not meet his father for many years, even though he grew up knowing who his father was...and developing a grudge against Clan Direnni as a result.
Narion is an adept mage and has turned his prodigious talents to the study and practice of necromancy, a choice that puts him at odds with many of his former supporters. However, he has recruited many necromancers, even those of other races, to his cause. While Narion is an Altmer supremacist, he has mixed feelings regarding using people of other races to get what he wants. He also acknowledges that there are occasionally non-Altmer individuals who are worthy of respect or affection, such as his half-Altmer, half-Breton, half-sister Jeanne-Françoise.
Narion and Kizzek Ayrenn Aldmeri Direnni have known each other for years, as both grew up as members of politically powerful families in Summerset. Both served on the Council of Summerset, a group of young, powerful Altmer who banded together to repel a Sload invasion of Summerset and ended up wielding significant power as more-or-less the bodyguards of the whole island and its inherent magic. Narion sought to use that magic in furtherance of his goals - to rule Tamriel and remake it in his image. Kizzek opposed Narion's schemes repeatedly, and for his trouble, was beaten, cursed, and left for dead outside an infamous tavern on the Alinor docks. Kizzek managed to crawl onto a ship headed for Morrowind, making it to the province of Vvardenfell, where the Dark Elves gave him aid. Because Kizzek is a member of the Altmer royal family, and a half-sibling of Queen Ayrenn, Lord Vivec of the Tribunal took a personal interest in him, teaching how to deal with his curse, though Lord Vivec himself was unable to fully remove it.
Narion is obsessed with the idea of destroying the Kindred Kingdom, to end the threat Kizzek poses to him once and for all, to punish Clan Direnni for the grievances Narion has against him, and to remove Jeanne-Françoise from the influence of "lesser creatures," as Narion puts it. To survive, the Kindred Kingdom will eventually have to deal with him once and for all.
